One of the first calls we received that morning was of a possible incendiary device that had gone off in a field. We did not know at that moment that this call was tied to another coming in. While fire units were out investigating that call, we started hearing calls over the police radio of reported shots fired at the high school. Those calls and the chaos that was to unfold on April 20, 1999 would forever be known to the world as Columbine. [Read more…] about Major Event Readiness
A message from PowerPhone’s CEO
As I follow the results of last night’s elections, there seems to be one consistent theme emanating from both sides of the aisle, which is that both parties must now work together to move our country forward. To echo our president, we need unity and accountability in order to be successful.
Politics aside that to me is also what is required of all of us in the emergency communications industry. 911 is not about police, fire or EMS. It is not about the call or the dispatch or even the response. 911 is not about the agency or the vendor. At its core, 911 is about help. It is about providing the appropriate assistance to someone in need. Quite frankly, those that need the help care the least about the mechanism in which it is being delivered. Only that it is delivered effectively and efficiently.
In order for all of us to be successful there needs to be a fundamental understanding and responsibility that we are all in this together. As vendors, we must always be ethical in our dealings and continue to innovate and educate you, the buyer. As clients, you must hold us accountable and never settle or accept anything less than our very best effort. The stakes are too high for all of us.
28 Years of Working Together
Today marks an important day in our company’s history. Twenty-eight years ago, PowerPhone was founded with the simple goal of improving how people communicate in a crisis. From those humble beginnings, I have been fortunate enough to witness not just the incredible growth of our own business, but also the evolution of an entire profession. We have visited all 50 states and a dozen foreign countries. While the language and cultures are sometimes different, there is usually one common thread: a small group of professionals working together to make things better and to improve the standard of care provided. We’re fortunate to have met all of you!
PowerPhone is excited for what the future holds. The stakes have never been higher for our company or for our industry, but to me, that is where meaningful change happens. As you visit our new website, we hope you find it rich in content and valuable to you in the performance of your job. The new PowerPhone.com was built for you, and we hope you take the time to learn more about our flagship brands DispatchU and Total Response – particularly how by applying a few baseline standards, you can achieve greater consistency on any call for service.
But First, We Celebrate
While there is much work to be done, there must also be time to celebrate your accomplishments. As my staff surprised me today with a cake in honor of our “birthday,” it signifies a time to reflect on the many amazing things that have happened over the last 28 years. From a small start-up in our founder’s home, to delivering pioneering training classes worldwide, to inventing the world’s first integrated 911 protocol platform, there has been one constant since day one: to provide innovative tools that help you help others.
Thank you for giving us that opportunity and we look forward to continuing to exceed your expectations.
